Routine Cleaning and Examinations

Addressing current problems such as decay and tooth sensitivity is just one step in achieving and maintaining an excellent level of Oral Health. We strongly promote great Oral health through preventative dentistry and patient education. As is now commonly known, there is a clear link between your Oral health and the common occurrence of other serious health concerns.

This is why we, and the Australian Dental Association, recommend you attend a routine exam and clean every 6 months. This process of early detection and intervention is not only beneficial to your health, but also your wallet as it may help avoid costly treatments in the future by catching problems early.

Providing or Updating Your Medical History

Here at Katoomba Dental Centre we maintain extensive records of your medical history to ensure nothing is missed. We have access to your My Health Records and an easy to use online form so that you can provide us with any detailed updates to your medical history.

It is important that you provide us with a detailed description of any medicines, medical conditions and allergies when you first visit us, and keep this up to date. We encourage every 6 months to update your records with us which assists your dentist in gaining and maintaining a better understanding of your overall health.

At your initial examination you will be introduced to our extensive modern approach in diagnosis. We initially take an OPG x-ray, then lead you to one of our surgeries for your oral examination. During this examination we take extensive intra-oral images of your entire mouth, enabling us to walk you through every potential or current problem you have, and giving us the ability to explain to you the different treatments we offer to address these problems. We will give you information or direct you to where you can seek further information on the treatment and problems we have identified during your appointment.

After your initial exam we design a customised treatment plan for you, providing you different options of treatment (if available) and the costs associated with them. We are then at your disposal to discuss your treatment plan further and explain any of the procedures to you in detail.

Ultrasonic Scaling and Polishing

Part of your Oral Health routine maintenance are your routine cleans. We provide an ultrasonic scaling and polishing treatment that removes dental plaque, tartar and extrinsic stains that are present on the outer surface of your teeth. This treatment cleans your teeth, preventing and controlling the severity of gum disease.

Problem areas will then be identified and instructions given to you to help improve your at-home care routine.  Once all of your surfaces are smooth and clean we may polish your teeth which makes them shiny and extra smooth.

Fluoride Treatment

We may apply fluoride as the final step to your dental cleaning. We place a small amount of fluoride gel into a small, flexible foam tray and place over your teeth for a short time. The fluoride helps to strengthen the teeth since the acids from bacteria in dental tartar and plaque will have weakened the surfaces.
