Teeth Whitening

Your smile is the way you greet the world. While you have many options for whitening your teeth, your dental professional is your best resource for whitening treatments. Teeth whitening has become one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures year after year. Teeth whitening can vastly improve the look of your smile, as over the years your teeth will natural darken due to stains entering from the surface, and also due to internal structural changes.

There are many causes of tooth discolouration. Some of the most common include the consumption of highly coloured foods and drinks (berries, coffee, tea, red wine). Some medications, aging, smoking and trauma can also cause teeth discolouration.  Whitening treatments help to reduce existing stains, though through consumption of coffee, soft drinks or just through natural aging, your teeth may eventually become discoloured again. Maintenance whitening can help combat recurring discolouration.

In-Chair Whitening with Phillips Zoom

At Katoomba Dental Centre we provide Philips Zoom in-chair whitening, rated the best in-chair whitening system in the US. Once big advantage of in-chair whitening is that in just one visit, you get the most advanced technology with the results you want.

Dental professionals have trusted Zoom’s technology and superior results backed by robust clinical evidence for more than 20 years. The Philips zoom treatment takes approximately 90 minutes to achieve the best result and give you a new bright smile. There may be some sensitivity during and after treatment, however your dentist will advise you on how best to reduce the chance of sensitivity before you book in for your treatment.

The whitening procedure first involves thorough isolation and protection of your cheeks, lips and gums followed by four 15 minute applications of hydrogen peroxide gel activated by Philips patented LED light.  The great part of doing in-chair whitening is you come to the surgery and in just a little over an hour you leave with whiter teeth.

Alternatively, we have take home products that can facilitate tooth whitening in the comfort of your own home. The take-home whitening gel contains a lower concentration of active ingredient, so it may take longer to achieve the result you are looking for.

Take home Whitening

After you have had your In-chair whitening treatment, you will be given your custom tray designed for your teeth, and some high potency gel so that you can reapply if your teeth begin to darken overtime again. The custom tray can last for years, and further gel can be purchased from us and very reasonable costs to help with maintenance whitening.

What are the side effects?

Clinical studies have shown that whitening your teeth with carbamide or hydrogen peroxide under the supervision of a dental professional is safe for both teeth and gums, however, some side effects may occur. The most common side effect is tooth and gum sensitivity.

Your dental professional will be the best resource to make sure you’re a good candidate for whitening and that you are using the right formula. So you will get a treatment recommendation that accounts for any unique needs you may have, including sensitivity issues or previous dental work such as veneers, fillings or caps. Tooth whitening does not lighten white fillings, porcelain crowns or bridges so check with your dentist whether this treatment is suitable for you.
