General and Preventive Care

At Katoomba Dental Centre, our experienced team of dentists provides the services you need to meet your family’s dental needs. We can treat you whether you need a simple check-up and clean or more complex treatment such as a root canal or extraction. You can count on us to provide gentle, caring treatment in our modern surgery.

Family Preventive Dental Care in Blue Mountains

We welcome every age group and often recommend twice-yearly visits for dental examinations and teeth cleans. This helps our dental team monitor oral health changes to help ensure you can avoid many common dental issues, like dental cavities and periodontal disease. How often you need to come to the clinic will depend on your individual needs.

At your initial examination, we will introduce you to our modern approach to dental diagnosis. We initially take an OPG x-ray, which provides a flat view of your upper and lower jaw, as well as intra-oral images of your entire mouth, enabling us to walk you through every potential or current problem you have. We will also clean your teeth to remove surface stains and promote gum health, and we may recommend additional preventive treatments such as fluoride.

After your initial exam, we design a customised treatment plan for you, providing you with different options for treatment and the costs associated with them. We offer procedures such as root canals, extractions, gum disease treatment, dental crowns and bridges.

How Much Does General and Preventive Dental Care Cost?

At Katoomba Dental Centre, fillings start from $203, and a comprehensive new patient check-up and clean is $199. These services are designed to help maintain your oral health and catch potential issues early. Costs may vary depending on the complexity of treatment and your individual needs. We recommend booking an appointment to receive tailored advice and care.

What's the Difference Between Preventative, General and Restorative Dentistry?

Most dental treatments are included under the general dentistry umbrella unless they are cosmetic or an advanced specialty. Below, we explain how preventative, general, and restorative dentistry differ.

Preventative Dentistry

Prevention is designed to prevent. So, any treatment that protects your teeth and gums is considered prevention. This includes check-ups, teeth cleans, mouthguards and more.

General Dentistry

Dental care treatments that repair or reverse oral health issues, including emergency dentistry and root canals, fall under the general dentistry umbrella.

Restorative Dentistry

When your Katoomba dentist repairs a tooth with a restoration (crown, filling or other) or provides tooth replacement, it is considered restorative dentistry.

Custom Mouthguards and Sports Dentistry

Prevention is about more than dental check-ups, teeth cleans and restoring oral health. It is also about protecting your family’s teeth from injury, particularly athletically inclined children participating in sports. If you or a loved one sustains an oral trauma, it's important to seek dental care as soon as possible. Leaving a chipped, broken or damaged tooth (or teeth) untreated can result in long-term complications, including the need for extraction.

If a tooth is knocked out during an activity, place it in milk or saliva until your emergency dental visit in Katoomba. With timely intervention, your dentist may be able to save the tooth. If you have a bleeding injury, apply gauze to staunch the flow, and contact our dental clinic as soon as possible for further instructions.

When it comes to sports, mouthguards are always your best bet for added protection.

Of course, you can purchase mouthguards in your local shop, but they do not offer the same protection as a custom appliance created by your Katoomba dentist. In addition, store-bought mouthguards simply do not fit well enough to create a proper buffer zone between teeth and stray balls or elbows.

If a mouthguard does not fit properly, it can also irritate gums and soft tissues, shift around, and your child may even remove it to better concentrate on their game or ease irritation. Fortunately, our mouthguards are fabricated from a direct impression of the teeth and gums for optimal fit, comfort and safety.

Protecting the dental health of young athletes is very important to our dental team, which is why we are thrilled to offer custom mouthguards in Katoomba.

Cosmetic Dentistry

If your teeth and gums are healthy, perhaps you would like to make cosmetic changes to make your smile more beautiful. Once reserved for the rich and famous, cosmetic dentistry treatments are available today to fit almost any budget. We offer teeth whitening, veneers, crowns, and bonding for smiles that need a boost.

Restorative Dental Care

When you have teeth that are damaged or missing, it’s crucial to repair or replace them. We provide a wide selection of restorative services at our Katoomba surgery.

  • Dental implants, dentures and bridges can replace missing teeth
  • Crowns or bonding can repair damaged teeth
  • Veneers can camouflage a host of problems with your smile

We rely on proven dental techniques and materials for durable, attractive restorations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your first visit to our Katoomba, NSW surgery will likely start with x-rays. The dentist or dental assistant will initially take a panoramic x-ray (OPG) for diagnostic purposes. X-rays enable the dentist to see beyond what is visible to the naked eye, so problems can be detected early while they are more easily treatable.

Afterwards, we will take you into the treatment room for a pre-clinical discussion. During this time, you and the dentist will get to know one another, and we will go over your medical and dental history. This is the perfect time for you to voice any concerns you might have about your oral health. There will be a clinical examination, and your dentist will make sure to note the condition of each tooth.

When the examination is complete, your dentist will explain findings and discuss treatment options that can help resolve the problems. We always leave plenty of time to answer questions and to explain why we recommend certain treatments. We want you to have the information you need to make a good decision regarding your oral health.

If it’s been a while since your last check-up, we invite you to call Katoomba Dental Centre to book an appointment.

Metal amalgam was a standard material used to fill cavities for many years, and millions of people have them. You can identify them by their tell-tale dark grey colour.

Recently, there have been concerns about the use of amalgam because of the mercury it contains. There have been many studies conducted on this issue, and experts have concluded that amalgam fillings are safe.

Today, however, tooth-coloured fillings, made of a composite of glass and plastic, are more commonly used to prevent the spread of tooth decay. Made to match the colour of your natural teeth, these fillings provide a more aesthetic way to fill in cavities.

In most cases, it is not necessary to replace amalgam fillings with composite fillings unless the metal fillings are compromised in some way. Often metal fillings begin to cause fractures in the tooth they have filled, and they need to be replaced to protect the remaining tooth structure. This is the main reason to replace them, and tooth-coloured composite fillings are often the replacement of choice.

If you have concerns about the amalgam fillings in your mouth, we invite you to contact our Katoomba, NSW dental surgery. We can conduct an examination and advise you on whether replacement with composite fillings is necessary.

Concern over pain is one of the most common reasons people avoid visiting the dentist regularly. For the most part, your dental treatment will not hurt. Most patients report little to no discomfort during routine treatments, such as dental cleans and check-ups.

If you need more invasive treatment, such as a filling or root canal, and we will fully numb the area with a local anaesthetic before proceeding. Any discomfort after the procedure can usually be alleviated with simple painkillers such as paracetamol and anti-inflammatory medicines.

If you are particularly anxious about visiting the dentist, we invite you to contact our Katoomba, NSW surgery ahead of time. Once we know you are nervous about treatment, we can do everything possible to make your time with us as comfortable as possible. Regular visits to the dentist often mean you can avoid more invasive treatments because we can usually detect—and fix—problems while they are still small. Taking good care of your teeth at home with routine brushing and flossing will also go a long way toward protecting your oral health, keeping the need for treatments to a minimum.

If you are overdue for a dental check-up and clean, call our dental clinic to book an appointment.

Dental fillings are part of cavity treatment. If you have a cavity, it means an area of decay on your tooth that needs intervention from your Katoomba dentist.

Dentists relied exclusively on silver amalgam fillings to treat tooth decay in the past. Today, we can use a tooth-coloured option to not take away from the appearance of your smile.

A tooth-coloured filling is made of white composite resin. We apply this resin in layers after treating the tooth decay. The resin hardens to restore function and aesthetics to your tooth.

The advantages of tooth-coloured fillings are that they are virtually undetectable when you smile. They also do not contain mercury, which many patients prefer.

Of course, no fillings at all are best! To lower your risks for tooth decay, be sure to adopt and implement an excellent oral care routine at home. And visit your dentist in Katoomba on schedule for check-ups and teeth cleans. Additionally, if you notice any issues between dental visits, we encourage you to contact our helpful team.

For Tooth-Coloured Fillings in Katoomba, We Welcome Your Call

Tooth-coloured fillings are a modern and aesthetically pleasing way to treat tooth decay. If you suspect a cavity or would like to arrange a check-up with one of our dentists, we are here for you.

Regular dental check-ups and teeth cleans with your Katoomba dentist are crucial to your long-term oral health.

Some conditions like emerging cavities and gingivitis do not always have symptoms. So, your regular check-up at the dental clinic can uncover these issues before they cost you time in the dental chair or lead to tooth loss.

At Katoomba Dental Centre, we customise your preventive check-up and teeth clean schedule based on your oral health profile. For example, if you are prone to cavities or are diagnosed with an oral health condition, we may recommend additional dental visits throughout the year.

However, most patients visit us yearly or every six months.

At these check-ups, your dentist examines your teeth and gums, takes x-rays when needed, provides an oral cancer screening, and shares any findings with you. Your teeth clean lowers your risks for preventable problems like cavities and gum disease.

It’s important to remember that some dental conditions don’t present with symptoms, and it is always better to treat an emerging issue than a problem that could cost you a tooth or require extensive care.

Is It Time for You to Visit Your Katoomba Dentist?

If it’s time for your next check-up and teeth clean, or if you have not been to the dentist in a while, we welcome your call. And don’t forget to ask about any current specials!

Root Canal Therapy

This feared dental procedure does not deserve its unfair reputation. This treatment will relieve pain rather than cause it—and it will save your tooth in the process. A root canal may rid your tooth of the infection as well as discomfort and swelling.

In many instances, your dentist suggests a tooth crown after healing to restore function to the tooth and guard against fractures.

Bruxism Treatment

If you think you might be clenching and grinding your teeth, your dentist can provide treatment. This sleeping habit, called bruxism, wreaks havoc on your teeth because it wears them down. It can also cause headaches and other upper-body pain in the neck, ears, and shoulders. We can create a customised oral appliance worn at night to keep you from harming your oral health.
