COVID-19 Policy

As our valued client, we would like to update you on the precautions we're taking to address the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation at our practice in Katoomba. Katoomba Dental Centre is closely monitoring all available information provided by NSW Health, the Australian Government and the World Health Organisation (WHO) in relation to the current health crisis. We are using this information to implement and reinforce a number of additional, proactive health and safety measures to ensure we can continue to provide you with the best and safest experience possible.

Your dentists at Katoomba Dental Centre understand that dental emergencies and toothaches will not wait until the threat of COVID-19 has passed. Fortunately, during this time of uncertainty, you can count on our compassionate dental team to work hard on your behalf—treating your dental emergency, easing your pain, and restoring your oral health.

With COVID-19 in our community, you have a lot to worry about—a toothache should not be one of them.

We believe our patients deserve to feel as safe and comfortable as possible. You can be assured that we are taking all the necessary steps to reduce the spread of infection. What is Katoomba Dental Centre doing?

  • Katoomba Dental Employees and Dentists have been instructed not to come to work if they have any of the symptoms associated with COVID-19 or are feeling unwell, have recently returned from a higher risk country, or have been in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19. Staff who have recently returned from overseas will be required to stay at home for 14 days regardless. Daily communications between staff members will take place to share the most up-to-date information from government and health authorities. 
  • We are currently restricting treatment to the recommendations from the Australian Dental Association. This means that at this time under level 1 restrictions we can see patients for all of our normal treatments we offer, unless we suspect the patient of having COVID-19. 
  • When it comes to clinic sterilisation protocols, we utilise the highest standards, relying on medical-grade disinfectants, instrument disposal when appropriate, two-fold sterilisation and the very latest in public safety recommendations.
  • We have installed a Ozone water system in the building to use for cleaning, patient mouth rinse, and the water in our dental chairs. This helps kill viruses and bacteria without damaging any human cells. 
  • We are screening all patients prior to coming in the practice and also when they arrive for their appointment for any temperature (using a digital temperature reader), and screening questions regarding travel and symptoms.
  • We have placed extra sanitisation units for customers to use in the reception area and will provide information throughout our practice about safe hygiene protocols. 
  • We are encouraging the use of card payments wherever possible to limit the handling of cash for both our customers and employees
  • We are currently waiving out 48 hour cancellation policy. If you feel sick on the day of your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible so we can reschedule. 
  • We will be removing all magazines, toys and books from our waiting room to limit the amount of contact that patients have in our premises.

At Katoomba Dental Care, we clean every part of our clinic—from exam rooms to reception, from hallways to public toilets—tirelessly throughout the day. We will be regularly cleaning high touch points and and commonly used surfaces such as bathrooms, handrails, doors, door handles, phones, desks, computer equipment, patient chairs, reception desk, pens, clipboards, eftpos terminals and counter-tops. 

The health and safety of our patients and staff remain our primary focus, so make sure to assist our staff by not making a mess, and alerting us to any mess that you see.

How can you help us?

  • Please do not attend your dental appointment if you have any COVID-19 symptoms. Patients and anyone with you (including children) will be asked to leave the premises and appointments rescheduled appropriately if they are showing signs of any of the following symptoms: 
    • Fever
    • Cough
    • Sore throat
    • Coughing
    • Unusual respiratory problems
    • Vomiting 
    • Diarrhoea
  • You will not be able to attend your appointment or bring anyone else with you to your appointment until you're 100% well for at least 48 hours, or have had a negative COVID-19 test. This may need to extend to those with sick people in your household or those who have traveled overseas within the last 14 days living in your household.
  • Patients who have recently returned from overseas within the last 14 days will have their appointments postponed. We will defer your appointment for the next 2 weeks as you are required to self-quarantine according to the Australian Government. If you have been overseas in the last 14 days and are feeling unwell, we advise you to call your doctor immediately. 
  • Please come alone to your appointment if possible, or limit the number of support people you need to bring. We may ask that only the patient (and one parent/guardian for children's appointments) enter our treatment rooms. Other siblings/support people will be asked to remain in the waiting room.
  • Please use the alcohol based handrub supplied on the front counter and waiting room when you enter the building. Please use this or wash your hands in the bathroom upon entering to help prevent the spread of germs. If your hands are visibly soiled, we will politely ask you that you wash your hands first before applying the alcohol based handrub. 

Emergency Dentistry During COVID-19

Waiting out a dental emergency can cost you your smile. And without intervention, an opportunistic infection can spread.

During this challenging time, our team remains committed to your oral health, providing emergency dentistry in Katoomba and palliative care when appropriate. We will always work hard to restore your oral health as soon as possible.

Protecting Your Family's Oral Health

During this challenging time—when it is not so easy to schedule regular dental exam and teeth clean—it is more important than ever to lower your family’s risks for oral infections and dental emergencies.

  • Brush and floss at least twice per day, especially before bed.
  • Avoid sugary and acidic snacks and beverages.
  • Enjoy a tooth-healthy diet that includes celery, strawberries and apples.
  • Drink at least eight glasses of water per day.
  • Be sure to wear all recommended or prescribed oral appliances - like nightguards.

If you are still not reassured by the level of caution we are taking here, but want to find out more about your teeth and oral health, then we have a solution for you. We have now partnered with a company called SmileMate. SmileMate makes use of an AI developed over 15 years to analyse images of your mouth, uploaded by you, and provide us with a detailed report on your oral condition. The system is still not a substitute for a clinical exam, and anything it reports on would need to be clinically confirmed by a practicing Dentist.

In accordance with recent ADA recommendations, we are operating at Level 1 restrictions. We can continue seeing patients for all routine treatments, including checkups and cleans. We will continue to screen patients before seeing our dentists, and any patient that is suspected of having COVID-19 will not be able to be treated.
