Dental emergencies can happen to anyone, but tooth pain, swelling, and similar oral health changes should be addressed as soon as possible by your Blue Mountains emergency dentist.

If you’re self-treating (applying ice packs and using over-the-counter pain relievers), you’re not getting to the root cause of your pain, which means the issue can worsen and potentially cost you a tooth.

In most cases, a toothache with swelling indicates a deep root infection. Without intervention, this infection can spread.

Common Dental Emergencies in Katoomba, NSW

Dental emergencies can mean many things, but the most common ones that we see include:

  • Tooth Root Infections
  • Oral Injuries
  • Broken or Damaged Teeth/Restorations

Prompt treatment typically means we have a better chance of saving a tooth. Likewise, part of the aim of emergency dentistry is to ease pain and restore oral function.

Potential Dental Emergency Treatments

  • Tooth Root Infection: If you have a deep tooth infection, our goal is to remove the infection via root canal therapy. We perform this treatment under local anaesthesia, rinse the tooth’s canal and seal it temporarily. At a future visit, we typically crown the tooth to restore function.
  • Oral Injuries: If you have a traumatic injury, not limited to the mouth, we urge you to seek medical care immediately at your local hospital. You can contact us after you’ve been assessed.
  • Broken or Damaged Teeth/Restorations: Our goal is to restore damaged teeth and repair or replace your restoration.

If you knock out a tooth, it’s essential to keep it hydrated in a cup of saliva or milk until it’s time to see the dentist. With timely treatment, we can sometimes save the tooth and restore it to the gum.
