Do you have missing teeth—a few teeth missing in succession? The dental bridge may be the solution you’ve been looking for. A dental bridge in Katoomba can be implant-supported or attached to healthy teeth via dental crowns.

This blog covers:

  • How the dental bridge works
  • How to care for the dental bridge
  • Dental bridge candidacy

How the Dental Bridge Works

Traditional Dental Bridge

The traditional dental bridge is always custom-designed to match your teeth and complement your smile. It is a prosthetic consisting of one or two artificial teeth, with a dental crown on either end of the prosthetic. Your dentist uses the crowns to cap anchoring teeth, allowing the prosthetic to close your smile gap.

Implant-Supported Bridge

An implant bridge is similar, but we use dental implants instead of tooth crowns to secure the prosthetic. We may use up to six implants to secure an arch of missing teeth. An entire arch may be referred to as All-on-4®.

An implant-supported bridge means we don’t have to cut neighboring teeth to secure the prosthetic. You’ll also appreciate zirconia's high function and durability, which is stronger than porcelain.

Only your Katoomba dentist can remove a dental bridge.

How to Care for the Dental Bridge

A dental bridge doesn’t require a lot of added maintenance. You brush and floss as usual and continue seeing the dentist every six months for checkups and teeth cleanings.

We recommend using a threader or water floss to clear debris from the gumline beneath your bridge. Your dentist will also discuss a special cleaning brush to keep debris from accumulating on the prosthetic.

Dental Bridge Candidacy

A tooth replacement consultation determines candidacy and is the first step toward your new smile. At this visit, the dentist will discuss bridge placement and care and ensure it is a suitable prosthetic for your smile goals.

This visit also determines whether you’ll need pretreatments before bridge placement. Implant-supported bridges in Katoomba may include bone grafting.

If a dental bridge is unsuitable for tooth replacement, the dentist can recommend alternatives, such as single dental implants or implant dentures.
