Wisdom Tooth Removal in Katoomba: When Extraction Is Recommended and What to Expect

Many patients wonder if they have to have their wisdom teeth extracted. The truth is, not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth removed; however, there are several reasons our dentists do recommend wisdom tooth extraction. Here's what you should know.

When Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?

Here are a few of the circumstances and reasons our dentists recommend wisdom tooth removal in Katoomba:

  • Cleanliness — Wisdom teeth, or third molars, arrive at the back of the mouth behind the second molars, so they are often hard to reach for proper brushing and flossing. If you can't clean them properly, you are more susceptible to developing common concerns like tooth decay, gum disease, and cavities.
  • Crowding — Many patients don't have enough room in their mouths for third molars. If that's the case, the wisdom teeth may start to crowd neighbouring teeth and cause tooth and bite misalignment.
  • Damage — Wisdom teeth that arrive at odd angles could cause wear or damage to surrounding teeth.
  • Impaction — If you have impacted wisdom teeth, it means that they are stuck beneath the gumline. Leaving them could cause an infection, and you would need infected wisdom tooth treatment.
