What are TMJ and bruxism?

TMJ means temporomandibular joint. When this joint does not function as it should, we say you have TMJ or TMD. The TMJs are in front of the ears and join your lower jaw to your skull. These joints should move easily when eating, yawning, and speaking. You should book an evaluation with your Katoomba dentist if they do not.

Bruxism means you grind your teeth when sleeping. Over time, this can lead to tooth breakage and even loss. Additionally, it causes exaggerated musculature in front of the ears and upper-body pain and can lead to or exacerbate TMJ.

Treating TMJ and Bruxism in Katoomba

Your dentist will evaluate your case and develop a treatment plan that meets you where you are in these conditions. Treatments can include muscle relaxers, appliance therapy, and jaw joint exercises.

In severe cases of TMJ, you may need surgical intervention to reestablish jaw joint health. Your dentist will discuss the options with you following your consultation.
