Dentists are trained to treat oral health issues, including problems in the maxillofacial area. Today, some dentists are happy to treat TMJ. Our dentists in Katoomba are happy to provide appropriate treatments and therapies for TMJ and bruxism (teeth grinding).
What Is TMJ and How Can My Dentist Help?
TMJ is short for temporomandibular joint. The shortened TMJ or TMD is used to describe disorders of this joint. The TMJs are the connecting joints at the back of the mouth that allow for speaking, yawning, and chewing. When these joints are not functioning correctly, they can be painful and debilitating.
Your dentist can evaluate your jaw joints and potentially create a treatment plan to relax the TMJs and ease symptoms.
Therapies may include one or more of the following:
- Relaxation exercises
- Functional therapies
- Muscle relaxants
- Nightguards
In severe cases, you may be recommended for surgery.
TMJ can be present at birth and symptomatic later or result from an injury or teeth grinding.
