Will I feel any pain with dental sedation?

No, you generally will not feel pain during dental sedation. The purpose of sedation dentistry is to help you stay calm and comfortable while your dentist works.

The sedation itself does not replace anaesthesia. Your dentist will still numb the treatment area, so you should not feel pain during dental sedation. Sedation is meant to manage your anxiety and overall comfort while the anaesthesia manages pain.

Sedation Options at Katoomba Dental Centre

We offer three levels of dental sedation depending on your needs:

  • Nitrous oxide — A mild form of sedation you breathe in through a small mask. You stay awake and relaxed, and the effects wear off within minutes.
  • Oral sedation — A medication taken before your appointment that produces a deeper level of relaxation. You may feel drowsy but remain conscious.
  • IV sedation — Delivered directly into the bloodstream for patients who need a deeper level of sedation. You will feel deeply relaxed and may not remember the procedure.

Does Dental Sedation Hurt?

Pain during dental sedation is not expected. If you feel any discomfort at any point during treatment, let your dental team know. We can adjust your anaesthesia or sedation level to keep you comfortable throughout.
