Will my tooth extraction hurt?

Will my tooth extraction hurt?

Tooth extraction is a painless procedure that is sometimes necessary to keep your oral health in check. Sometimes, if it’s not a wisdom tooth or planned extraction for orthodontics, your Katoomba dentist will recommend tooth replacement.

Depending on the x-ray findings, extractions may be surgical or straightforward. For example, an impacted wisdom tooth that is encroaching on neighbouring teeth and roots is considered a surgical extraction.

No matter the extraction type, we use local anaesthesia to ensure a numbed treatment site and offer sedation dentistry. After the medication wears off, you may notice mild soreness, which you can treat with an over-the-counter pain reliever.

Reasons You May Need Tooth Extraction

  • Damaged or Deeply Decayed Tooth — Your dentist will recommend tooth replacement in this case.
  • Post Root Canal Therapy — A dental crown restores tooth stability after a treated infection.
  • Overcrowding or Impaction—A wisdom tooth or other teeth that do not line up correctly on the jaw may need to be extracted.
  • Before Orthodontics — Extracting a tooth before orthodontics is common for a predictable outcome.
  • Before Complete Dentures— If supporting teeth are not stable enough to support a partial denture, we will extract and place a complete denture.
